Literacy
What do we do in Literacy?
Each day the students will focus on the following to improve their reading, writing, and speaking language skills:
- Phonemic Awareness-Reading Horizons is the primary curriculum that focuses on a group of phonemes each week to practice and master. Heggerty is a research-based, supplementary curriculum that provides opportunities to develop phoneme awareness by blending, segmenting, adding, deleting, and substituting syllables and phonemes.
- Reading Fluency-Students will read timed fluency passages to measure the number and accuracy of words read. Fluency is a key foundational skill that helps students improve their comprehension skills.
- Spelling-Spelling words will be based on the phonemes that we are focusing on each week. Each day we will practice spelling through a variety of activities. The spelling words will be sent home each week with the homework. Students will be tested on spelling words each Friday.
- Vocabulary/Comprehension-Wonders is the curriculum we will use for our weekly comprehension and vocabulary words. Vocabulary words and their definitions will be sent home with the homework weekly. Vocabulary words and comprehension will be tested each Friday.
