Do you remember when you were in school and had to memorize numerous facts and steps to solve a math problem? Did you ever wonder, "When will I ever use this?"
A lot has changed in the way we teach mathematics from when I was in school. Now the focus on math education is to help students have a solid foundation by exploring math using a hands-on, real-life approach. Students are encouraged to talk about math and explain their thinking. Here are the, simplified, core principles that we teach at the beginning of the year and reinforce throughout the year:
